Intergenerational transmission of left-right ideology: A question of gender and parenting style?

“Left” and “right” are common concepts when it comes to describing both political attitudes of citizens politicians or classifying, for example, parties on the spectrum. But how do ideological emerge? One central factor is socialization, in which family a key socialization agent. However, existing research focuses largely partisan preferences they emerge through socialization. Nevertheless, due multiparty systems, this concept less suitable European context. This paper therefore contributes filling gap by looking at role as agent emergence attitudes. Hereby focus two questions: what difference does cross-gender transmission left-right ideology make? How parenting style affect intergenerational transmission? These questions examined using Cultural Pathways Economic Self-Sufficiency Entrepreneurship (CUPESSE) dataset, whose structure allows several advances studies. First, contains high number cases with more than 4,000 parent-child dyads, come from total 11 countries thus allow view beyond single country Furthermore, classification children enables analyses based perception recipients rather parent self-assessment. The results analysis indicate that differences between parents vary processes. It also shows similarity influenced style, such whether experienced warmth their parents, support pursuit autonomy, strong controlling behavior.
